Frequently asked questions and answers about download and upload rights

About watching / downloading / streaming content from illegal websites

I only watch streams so it is not a big problem

Watching illegal streams is still illegal and it's also a big problem for the copyright holders. A lot of people think that way so the collective usage of these illegal streams is very big.
If you enjoy watching content by stream, better use a legal streaming service in your area to support the creation of future new content you like.

It says it is a legal website

Some websites write that they are legitimate or legal or that what they do is legal under fair use or for promotional purposes. However, claiming this is just done to eliminate the hesitation some users might have while consuming illegal content. After all everyone feels better when reading that the website they are currently using is 100% legal.
But all websites writing things like these are definitely illegal and just come up with any excuse to trick unexperienced users.

I thought I was using a legal site

There is a large number of fans that falls prey into using illegal websites. One way to check if the website you are using is legal is to check if it is included in these list of legal streaming services: get-animes.com (Japanese animes), get-dramas.com (Asian dramas).

A lot of people use the same illegal website as me so why not do it as well

Just because others are doing something stupid you don't have to do the same. If you like the content you watch, better support the copyright holders by using a legal service to watch it.
If nobody is paying any money to watch the content, then how do you think will they be able to create new shows for you to enjoy?
Giving support for legal services will enable content makers to publish more content in the future. Some content is even released for free legally (paid through advertisement shown on the website), so there is absolutely no reason to watch it illegally.

I don't have enough money to pay for content

In many cases the prices for content which is officially distributed on online platforms is very reasonable. On top, in some cases the platforms even offer users to watch or read the first part of the content for free to get a preview before spending money for it.
Every user should think about for how more expensive things they regularly pay money (either for a new smartphone or regular hobbies). Consider enjoying content as a hobby and invest a small part of your money to continue enjoying it and supporting the content creators.

Uploading illegal copies / operating illegal websites

I am only linking to / embedding the content so I am not liable for anything

Recent court decisions in various countries expressed that once you are aware that the content you embed / link to is illegal, you are indeed liable if you don't remove it.
Rightholders do not upload their content on filehosting or streaming services, especially not without any geoblocking restrictions. Also it is also very uncommon that official uploads can be embedded into third party websites.

Other people are doing it, so it is okay

Just because other people do something illegal, it does not mean you can do it legally.
Also, just because a rightholder does not instantly report unauthorized uploads, it does not mean that he gives anyone a (silent) permission to do so.

I am only promoting the content so there is no damage for the companies

Uploading for promotion purposes are only carried out by official partners of the rights holder. Promotion is not done by uploading the full content without prior explicit authorization.
If you upload the full content, nobody will afterwards use the official offers. This is why unauthorized uploads damage the content and do not promote it.

We compiled / edited / subbed / dubbed these series therefore it is our own creative work

Even if you edit the content or compile it in a new way, you are still using the content as a base (without authorization). So you have no rights to create your work in the first place, meaning that it is still illegal and you are not allowed to share it with other people.

I am just helping fans by providing / collecting links (I am like Google)

Redirecting other fans to the legal release or the official site is the right thing to do because sharing illegal links only support illegal actions. Helping illegal sites or operations to spread illegal content is also a crime. (and yes, Google also removes illegal entries from their search results)

Instead, we should support legal services. In this case, we are helping legitimate companies spread word of their content and we are convincing other fans to support the legal releases as well.

Pirate DVDs / Burned DVDs / Personal use copy

Downloading / Buying the complete series is okay as long as it is for personal use only

In recent years official DVD / Bluray sales have suffered due to illegal distribution. Downloading the series illegally is not okay, even if you just do it for personal use. Burning it afterwards will not make the situation any better.
A burned DVD or a pirate DVD bought on the streets only supports illegal distribution and not the content creators or the local distributors in your country. If there is an official release, please consider buying it.

If you don't support official releases, rights owners or local distributors may stop releasing content at all in the future. If that happens, fans like you will also not be able to enjoy new contents.

As long as there is no official release obtaining the pirated version is okay

The quality of illegal DVDs is far inferior than the regular version. There are other ways to get access to animes, dramas and movies earlier than packaged release, such as the increasing number of official video-on-demand streaming services available, not just in DVD form. These services are cheaper than purchasing illegal DVDs and the process of subscribing is very easy.

Nowadays, most new series and movies are available legally on different official video-on-demand streaming services worldwide. It is no longer an excuse to say "it is not available in my country" because most likely it is.
This is the best way to receive quality translation (compared to the often mistranslated versions of illegal copies), as well as support the original work of the content creators, the film’s actors, and all others involved.

I want to see the series but the price of genuine products is too high

The price of genuine products is defined by the amount of copies the publishers believe they will sell. If all people just use illegal copies, the publishers have to calculate with smaller amount of sales, therefore the prices will raise. Otherwise the local publisher could not cover the costs of localization and publishing.
On the other hand it is also possible to watch the content for a lower price on official video-on-demand streaming services. A list of such sites can be found here: get-animes.com (Japanese Animes), get-dramas.com (Asian Dramas, Variety Shows and Movies).

If these legitimate sites are supported, profits can increase for the producers of the original content. This alternative way of watching content should be promoted now to ensure continued production of high-quality and legal worldwide distribution.

About the companies (publisher, production companies, rightholder, etc.)

I want to watch on TV but it's only available on paid channels

We still have to pay certain fees to add channels in our regular TV subscription because these network providers also have to pay fees to get foreign channels or to license and localize foreign content.
In case you are not willing to pay extra fees, there might also be series that are offered for free (advertisement-based) by your local TV stations and they might be dubbed already.

When you say "legal" it means it costs a lot of money

There are a number of free (advertisement-based) legal websites that are available in many countries. Also, "legal services" does not connote that it would be expensive. For example, the prices for these legal services can start as low as $ 2.50 per month with a 1 month free trial. But we also have to consider why other legal sites may charge more than others because they also have to pay licensee fees etc.

For a full list of services available in your country, get-animes.com (animated videos), get-dramas.com (Asian dramas).

Legal services have slow servers and they take more time to upload new episodes

Companies do their best to give fans the optimum quality experience with their content, so new episodes can take some time to be released. They take their time to ensure the best subtitles and other aspects, which most illegal sites do not offer (even if they sometimes upload ahead of the legal release). It is best to be mindful and be patient for good quality legal content. This way you can enjoy it to the fullest.

The series I want to watch is not available on this website

Maybe the series is just not available in a standard or free-of-charge subscription. In this case, you have to upgrade your subscription.
If the service you use does not have the series you want to watch, consider using another legal service which offers a wider amount of shows you are interested in.
An alternative, if you do not want to pay at all, is to watch on free (advertisement-based) legal services.

For a list of legal services that offer Animes: get-animes.com

The site I am using is illegal but has good quality videos

There are many legal video-on-demand streaming services that offer good quality videos as well.
On the other hand, as piracy is illegal, such illegal websites are often down or unavailable due to anti-piracy measures.
Using legal websites you will have no problems with removed streams or taken down websites.
